This photo was taken on my son’s and my Birth Day. However, we don’t share the same ‘birthday’. Hmm this is starting to sound like a bit of a riddle!
My son was my first baby, and the moment we welcomed him into the world, I became a mother.
Women become mothers every day, all around the world and in a number of societies they are truly celebrated, rightly so, but in some western societies the excitement of a new baby overshadows what the woman has just done and this is where we need to refocus for ourselves, our families and more broadly, our entire communities.
Now, I’m not talking about giving women a trophy, a medal or a 2 week holiday in the Maldives - although that last one does sound appealing! - I’m talking about truly giving them the love and support they need in the weeks and months following the birth of their baby / babies so that they can fully embrace what they have just done, bond with their baby and regain their strength and energy after pregnancy & birth.
I’ll be increasingly addressing the postpartum period over the coming months and how we can help new mothers in the best possible way.
“The brand-new mom is dealing with change on every level - the shape of her family, body, even her identity has shifted, but nothing is yet defined.” - Heng Ou
